Celia Austen-Potts BA Hons ATD
Celia was born in Somerset, moved to Wales and obtained a BA Hons degree in Graphic Design at Newport College of Art, followed by a post-grad qualification at Cardiff University. She taught art in secondary schools & further education colleges in the UK and abroad being promoted to Head of Art and later Director of Post 16 Training. Throughout her career she continued to produce her own art work, moving away from Graphics to experiment with a variety of mediums.
Her work has been exhibited widely in the UK, she has had 5 solo exhibitions and contributed to many smaller group shows. More major venues have been in the Fylde Gallery in Blackpool, Dumfries Arts Centre, Cardiff Arts Centres, Newport Art Gallery as well as the Mall Galleries in London. Her custom painting on motorbikes has been featured in specialist bike magazines and Celia was responsible for a huge mural that lined both sides of the staircase in the Wetherspoon’s Coal Orchard pub, Taunton. Celia has also done quite a few murals in private houses and she has trained and supported young people to produce their own murals in youth centres and schools. Now retired she has more time for her personal painting.
“Inspired by the natural world, I want my Art to be colourful and fun, an enjoyable experience for me and an enhancement to the lives of others. I believe that each piece should be unique and original. I physically cannot paint the same picture twice, once completed, I’ve moved on and any attempt at copying something would have lost it’s spontaneity. Equally, I have not had any prints taken from any of my paintings but I do sometimes use digital photography as a creative medium, usually initiated by one of my own paintings. Most of my current work is in acrylic paints and inks, water colours or pencils and sometimes mixed media.“
Her work is largely representational.
